Is Your Family Growing? 2 Tips For Adding Onto Your Home Instead Of Moving Out

If your family is growing and you have outgrown your home, you can save money by adding onto your home instead of moving out and finding a new one. If you choose to do this, below are two tips to help you get started so your new addition will be perfect for you and your family.

Adding a Basement

If you presently have a basement on your existing home, you may want the new addition to also have a basement. If so, you have to cut into the existing foundation of your home to add an entryway between the existing and new basement. For example, you can add a door to walk through from one basement to the other. It is much easier and more cost effective to have this done during the construction process and not after you finish.

To do this, you need to hire a concrete cutting contractor. The contractor will use a hammer drill to drill out and then bolt two parallel metal bars to the wall where you want the door. These bars serves as a guide when cutting out the door.

When they finish this, the contractor will use a wall saw to saw up and down the metal bars. They will need to make more than one pass to break through the concrete. When the sides are cut, they will do the same process to cut the top and bottom of the doorway. They may need to use some wedges and a sledgehammer to remove some of the concrete that may be left behind.

When the opening is finished, the contractor will frame a structural header so it supports your home properly.  The concrete cutting contractor can go over this with you in much more detail so you can understand how it works. You should not attempt to do this on your own, because if not done correctly it will cause damage resulting in expensive repairs. A company like Stone Cutter Construction can give you more information.

Making it Match

When adding a new addition, you want the new to match with the old, so it does not stand out. To do this, you need to carefully choose the materials you use. If your home is painted, the paint used may no longer be available. Even if it is, the existing paint will be faded due to the sun, which can make matching the colors impossible. In a case like this, you should consider painting your entire home.

The roof is another area that may be hard to match, especially if you have had your current roof for some time. The new roof will not blend in with the old, so the best thing to do is to replace the entire roof on your home.

These are just two things you need to consider when adding onto your home. If you are not experienced, hire a professional building contractor to add the new addition for you.
